The ancient yew tree this table is made from grew up in Newtownmountkennedy.
It was guessed to be about 800 years old though it is hard to date Yew accurately as it regenerates itself constantly.
It was was felled for safety reasons and is certainly a huge specimen.
The two plinths are the trunk split and squared all sides but one revealing the intricate and contorted grain.
The creamy sapwood is now the inside faces of the table.
The toughened glass top can be changed to extend the table.
It is said that a Yew tree was planted on the grave of revered chieftains to help them with their journey to the afterlife. These sites then became sacred. It helps that in a dense wood a yews often creates a clear area under its canopy. Ideal for a meeting space. It was on these sites that christian churches were planted rather than the other way around.
